An introduction to Maja

Maja Johanne Lauesen’s practice explores the shifting boundaries between the natural and the constructed, the personal and the collective. Working with materials like plaster, lacquer, and concrete, she creates abstract forms that mirror both industrial structures and organic growth. Through gestures of repetition, mirroring, and fluid motion, Lauesen blurs distinctions between human-made environments and elemental forces. Her work evoke the tension between precision and unpredictability—reflecting the complex, layered ways in which identities, landscapes, and cultural systems intertwine. In challenging traditional hierarchies and exploring shared narratives, her work invites viewers into a space where the boundaries of self, community, and environment are continually reimagined.

Lauesen studied at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in Norway and also spent time at the École Nationale d’Arts de Paris-Cergy, where she focused on contemporary art and social issues. Furthermore, her work is informed by studies in feminist theory and gender history, providing a critical framework for exploring identity, power, and interconnectedness.
